March 2022 Charity Spotlight: SNAFU Rescue SNAFU Rescue (Short Noses And Friends United Rescue) is dedicated to Rescuing, Rehabilitating, and Rehoming short-nosed dog breeds in need. The SNAFU Rescue team, comprised solely of volunteers, works to raise money to remove dogs from commercial breeding systems and from commercial breeder dog auctions while also assisting with the costs of necessary veterinary care and spay/neuter costs. When needed, SNAFU Rescue also takes in short-nose breeds from owner-surrender situations and shelters. Meet Bernie. Born with a severe heart condition, Bernie was facing congestive heart failure and a short life. But thanks to Bernie’s foster family, a pro-bono veterinary consultation, and the HUGE fund-raising efforts of SNAFU Rescue, Bernie was able to receive life-saving surgery on March 30th and is recovering nicely. Just 24 hours after his surgery, Bernie was eating, drinking, and greeting every passerby with a wigglebutt. Located mainly in the Midwest, SNAFU Rescue rehabilitates short-nosed dogs taken into their rescue and facilitates the adoption of eligible dogs. When space is not available, they coordinate with a network of other rescues and/or place dogs in need with vetted foster families. Nationwide adoptions are available provided the approved adoptive family is willing to travel to SNAFU Rescue to pick up their dog. If, for any reason, they are not able to keep the dog, they must agree to return their adopted dog to SNAFU Rescue or to the original foster home at their own expense. In 2021, SNAFU Rescue rescued nearly 100 dogs and 35 are still in foster care today. Many dogs have medical issues requiring costly medical care. 4Knines is proud to support SNAFU Rescue with a cash donation and by donating a variety of 4Knines products to their upcoming silent auction, taking place on the SNAFU Rescue Facebook Auction page from April 28 through May1. February 2022 Charity Spotlight: Paws and Stripes Helping dogs, helping heroes. The mission of Paws and Stripes is to provide animal assisted therapy to military veterans with PTSD, MST, and TBI using rescue dogs; saving lives, two at a time. Their vision is to see veterans and their dogs living without isolation. Paws and Stripes was founded in Rio Rancho, NM in 2010. Lindsey Kay was motivated by her passion for dogs and the love of her country and those who have sacrificed so much to protect it. A family member of Lindsey’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a traumatic brain injury researched multiple organizations but was unable to pay for service dogs due to the high cost. Lindsey decided to start an organization dedicated to providing service dogs at no cost to veterans in order to fill this critical unmet need for veterans. In 2010, Paws and Stripes graduated with their first team, Jim and Sarge. In 2012, Paws and Stripes first officially integrated a mental health component to our training programs. The Paws and Stripes team provides equal access to all qualified veteran applicants through a variety of services and support programs. The Companion Animal Program is for individuals who are looking for a well-trained pet, as well as access to other resources. The Service Dog Program is for individuals who need support regarding their disability on a day-to-day basis. The Pawsitive life group is a veteran support group for survivors of suicide and suicide loss. Since inception almost 10 years ago, Paws and Stripes has served veterans, rescued and rehabilitated shelter dogs as service dogs, and refined their mental health programming offering bond-based training to veterans for free. Their program has drawn veterans from New Mexico and around the country. Unfortunately, the cost of service dogs for veterans is not typically covered by insurance companies. Privately, the cost of a dog and its training ranges from $10,000 to $60,000. Paws and Stripes provides these services for free, at no cost to the veteran to enroll. 9 Facts You Need To Know About Canine Dental Health 4Knines Staff • 2/10/22 Does your dog’s breath keep you from having quality snuggle time? If your dog hasn’t had a teeth cleaning in a while (or ever), keep reading. Dog owners often overlook the early warning signs of dental disease because they think ‘stinky dog breath’ is just something dogs inherently have. Dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems so be sure to have your vet do a thorough checkup at least once a year. Here are 9 facts you need to know about protecting your dog’s teefies so you can be the best advocate possible for your dog’s health. 1. Dental disease begins early in life. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says that by the age of three, most dogs have some degree of dental disease. The early signs of dental disease in pets include bad breath, yellow tartar buildup on the teeth, and red and swollen gums. 2. Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth is an excellent way to prevent plaque buildup. You can ask your veterinarian about what toothpastes and brushes are best. Never use human toothpaste, which can contain ingredients like xylitol that are toxic to animals. 3. Daily chewing activities can also be effective in maintaining oral health. Chewing is the natural way for dogs to clean their teeth as the act of gnawing scrapes plaque off of teeth. 4. Advanced dental disease can cause serious problems. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), early detection and treatment are critical, because advanced periodontal disease can cause severe problems and pain for your pet, including kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes. 5. Your pet’s teeth need to be checked sooner if you observe any of the following problems: Source: AVMA Bad breath Broken or loose teeth Extra teeth or retained baby teeth Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth Reduced appetite or refusal to eat Pain in or around the mouth Bleeding from the mouth Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth 6. Most dental disease occurs below the gumline, where you can’t see it. Your vet may require X-rays before the cleaning. 7. It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Doggy dental cleaning includes scaling (to remove dental plaque and tartar) and polishing, which is much like what us humans experience at our teeth cleanings. 8. Anesthesia is safe. AAHA states that before anesthesia, your dog will be carefully screened with bloodwork and other tests to ensure they are free from underlying disease. Without anesthesia, it’s impossible to obtain X-rays to see what lies beneath your pet’s gumline. It is also impossible to safely and effectively clean the teeth using those sharp instruments while the pet is awake. 9. The key is prevention. Regularly brush your dog’s teeth, use dental chews and treats, and get periodic dental cleanings by your veterinarian. It’s worth it in the long run! January 2022 Charity Spotlight At the end of every month, we donate a percentage of every sale to an animal advocacy group. This month, we chose to donate to H & P Animal Alliance! This month’s 4Knines spotlight charity is H & P Animal Alliance, a foster-based nonprofit working to better the lives of animals through education and action. H & P Animal Alliance works alongside other rescues to pull dogs from overcrowded shelters in south Arkansas, giving them another chance at life by finding the loving homes they deserve. H & P Animal Alliance also transports shelter dogs to their northern rescue partners where they are matched up with forever homes. Volunteers recently completed their first big transport in their new van, saving 44 pups from Ouachita and Columbia County shelters! The dogs on this transport had been in shelters or pounds for months - some for years. H & P Animal Alliance is a small organization that operates with the help of caring volunteers and foster homes. They rely solely on donations to help with vet bills and transportation costs. The adoption process includes an application, home check, vet check, and reference check, and their adoptable dogs are completely vetted, including being spayed/neutered and microchipped. Through their low cost spay and neuter program, SNIP (Spay and Neuter Initiative Program), H & P Animal Alliance has helped over 1000 families in their community with the cost of this important procedure. They also bring a low cost clinic to their area and supplement costs - helping even more people and pets! To raise funds for their mission, H & P Animal Alliance is offering Valentine’s Day Puppy Grams on February 13th and 14th. 15 Dog Travel Must-Haves and Tips for Stress-Free Traveling Any dog lover knows that a vacation is just not the same if your dogs can't join in on the fun! We are huge fans of bringing the dogs along whenever possible. Although it requires a bit of extra preparation, after many years and dozens of road trips, we like to think that we have become quite proficient at it! 1. Lid Locking Container Naturally, you will be bringing dog food along on your road trip. We recommend packing it in a lid-locking container instead of keeping it in the standard food bag to prevent accidental spills or tears. Depending on where you will be staying, these are also great for containing smells and not attracting unwanted animals! 2. Measuring Cup Just because you may be lax with the calorie counting on vacation doesn't mean that you should do the same for your pets! Consistency is key to maintaining a healthy weight, and it is very important to measure your dog's meals. We use a collapsible measuring cup to save space! 3. Collapsible Water Bowl You must remember to keep your dog hydrated on a long road trip. Set a reminder on your phone to make regular stops and provide fresh water. We recommend you bring along a collapsible water bowl for convenience and because it saves precious space in the car! 4. Waste Bags When you gotta go, you gotta go, right? You will likely be visiting rest stops, parks or even an open patch of grass to let the dogs do their business. Cleaning up after your dog is not only courteous but also good for the environment. We like to pack a 30-foot training leash to give the dogs a little room to explore whenever possible. These leashes also function great as a tie-out if you are stopping for a picnic or resting on a hike. 9. Up-To-Date Tags Before you leave home, make sure you have your pet's tags. If they ever wander too far or get lost, you’d want their collar to contain your pet’s name and your current contact information. 10. Reflective Gear You will likely be doing at least a portion of the driving at night. Packing reflective gear for you and your dog is a great idea to ensure you are visible when making pit stops or taking potty breaks along the way. 11. Vet Records In the event of an emergency, you don’t want any obstacles in the way of your pet’s care and rapid treatment. Have any necessary records on hand (this includes vaccination records). This isn’t just helpful for emergencies; you’ll also find yourself needing these documents if you simply want to take your dog to the groomers. Most pet stores and grooming salons require vaccination records for an appointment. If your pet needs a bath, nail trim or a full-blown spa day during your travels, you’ll be glad to have their immunization records. 12. Towels and Grooming Supplies Let’s face it; our dogs need frequent attention to keep their skin, coats and paws healthy. Pack up the following supplies to make sure your pet has what they need: Shampoo Conditioner Undercoat remover Brush Towels Nose balm (especially if your destination is a cold or dry environment) Paw moisturizer (again, great for cold or dry environments) 13. Dog Energy Bars Things can get a bit hectic on a road trip, so it is a great idea to have bars or snacks on hand to provide sustaining energy. Make sure to keep in mind your dog's regular eating schedule, and if you are unable to feed at that time, supplement as needed. These snacks are also great to use as an energy booster during long hikes. Be aware of your dog's daily activity level when determining whether or not you should omit these calories from their next meal. 14. Travel Crate Many dogs see their crates as a familiar and safe place. We recommend bringing along a lightweight, collapsible crate, so your pet feels comfortable in their new environment. 15. Taste of Home Last but not least, pack a small bag with some of your dog's favorite things. Pick things that bring comfort to your dog and ease any stress or anxiety they may experience while traveling. We like to bring some of our dog’s favorite toys and a blanket! Road Trips With Dogs: Tips and Tricks Once your essentials are packed, it’s time to hit the road. But, if you’ve never taken a road trip with your pet, you’ll need to know a few things before you leave. Here are some tips for long road trips with dogs and some dog road trip accessories you may find helpful along the way. Tip 1: Don’t Let Your Dog Roam Freely It is dangerous to allow your dog to roam around the car as you drive. For the safety of both your pup and everyone else in the vehicle, it is important to restrain your dog when the vehicle is in motion. If you plan on using a dog seat cover, make sure it has seat belt openings so you can use a pet seat belt. Tip 2: Give Them Some Entertainment If your dog is bored, there is a much higher chance of misbehaving. Give them something to do to keep boredom at bay. Feed and walk your dog as close as you can to the time you usually do, and this will help reestablish some of the routines your pup expects and enjoys. 5 DOG CAR SAFETY TIPS BY: 4KNINES CAR SAFETY FOR DOGS BY: 4KNINES If you’re like most dog lovers, you enjoy taking your best friend with you everywhere – whether that’s on a cross-country road trip or a trip to the dog park. No matter where you drive with your pet, you need to be familiar with dog car safety. Today, we'll share five essential car safety considerations that will make traveling with your furry friend safe and stress-free: Take regular breaks Watch for signs of car anxiety Start car training Review vehicle restraint requirements Vehicle comforts to aid with pet travel 1. TAKE REGULAR BREAKS Because we frequently need to travel with our pets, we should be aware of their basic needs to prepare them for the journey that lies ahead. Dogs, especially large or active ones, shouldn’t be in the car for longer than 4 hours without a break. During a road trip with your pet, give your dog plenty of opportunities to drink water, go potty and stretch its legs to reset from the drive. Dogs can get very anxious during car rides but making time for stops allows them to take a breather. If your dog is not prepared to ride 4 or more hours without stopping, then try to take a break every hour to help them get used to sitting in the car for long periods. 2. WATCH FOR SIGNS OF CAR ANXIETY Car rides can be very stressful for dogs. It’s important to notice the changes in your dog’s behavior when riding in the car with you. Being aware will help you gauge whether they are experiencing anxiety and how to address it. Symptoms of car anxiety: Resisting getting into the car Trembling Excessive whining or barking Frequent or excessive licking or chewing Vomiting Urinating or pooping in the car If your dog is exhibiting signs of anxiety, there are ways to ease them into the idea of car travel. The key is to find what your dog is comfortable with before slowly expanding that comfort zone. For example, if your dog resists getting into the car with you, you might try sitting with your dog in the driveway before gradually approaching the car and climbing inside. Meanwhile, there should be plenty of praise and treats. Over time, your dog’s anxiety should cease, and you should be able to go for short drives and eventually longer ones. If training isn’t enough, there are other anxiety solutions. Consult with your vet to see if you can add chewable anti-anxiety supplements, stress-relief sprays, natural herbal remedies, or motion-sickness medications to your dog's car training. If you are against medication and chews to help ease your dog’s anxiety, you can also try spraying dog pheromones in the car or getting a pheromone-infused collar. Dog pheromones are known to relax dogs experiencing anxiety. 3. START CAR TRAINING Depending on how comfortable your dog is riding in the car, you may have to start training their behavior to help them adjust to transit. Take it easy on your pup and find small ways to help them get acclimated, like giving them a treat or reward each time they are quiet during the ride or when they refrain from accidents in the car. Rewarding positive behavior helps demonstrate to your dog which behaviors you would like to see. Another training technique involves making the car part of a game! While your car is parked, hide a treat somewhere in the car and have your pet hunt it down. Dogs love using their senses to claim these delicious rewards. To teach your dog to play, start by “hiding” the treat in plain sight somewhere near the car. Make the first few very easy to find. Eventually, you can move the treat into the car and make it more challenging to sniff out. Another trick is to reward your dog with a treat every time they enter the car. This helps establish that the car is a good space that comes with good rewards. 4. PURCHASE THE RIGHT DOG VEHICLE SAFETY EQUIPMENT Restraining your dog is a critical piece of car safety. We don’t like to think about it, but we know that unrestrained dogs can come to serious harm and even death if the car is involved in an accident. Additionally, dogs that enjoy exploring the car while it’s moving can be a dangerous distraction to the driver. In some states, it’s even illegal to drive without properly securing your dog. Before planning an interstate road trip, you should review the list of states that prohibit unrestrained dogs while driving: Connecticut Maine Massachusetts Minnesota New Hampshire Rhode Island Legal repercussions aside, we want our fur babies to be safe above all else. So, be sure to use a dog restraint in the car or secure your pet with one of these other dog car safety products: DOG CAR SEAT BELTS Dog car seat belts are one way that you can safely restrain your pup while driving. Once installed correctly, dog car seat belts will help protect your dog from jumping out of the window, from getting hit with unknown debris while hanging their head out of the window, and from being choked by a leash or tether in an accident. They also protect your dog from being ejected from the car in an accident. Most dog seat belts also have a loop for you to click into your seat belt to restrain your dog correctly. When shopping for a suitable restraint, look for something adjustable that can fit comfortably around your pup. DOG CAR HARNESSES Dog car harnesses are another way to keep your dog safe and secure while driving. It’s essential to measure your dog’s chest, neck, and body length measurements to ensure a snug fit. There are numerous dog car harnesses on the market, so make sure to read reviews and determine which features you need for your pet. Some harnesses come with various options like an attached dog car seat belt, padded chest plates and cushioning, and different materials (important for dogs with sensitive skin). Michelle Delaney combined her lifelong passion for dogs and a 28-year career as a firefighter/EMT into a successful dog training business endeavor. With her public servant’s heart and her expertise as a professional dog trainer, Michelle founded Big Cypress German Shepherd Rescue in 2015. A devoted advocate for animal welfare, Michelle dedicates her personal time and resources to address behavioral and malnutrition issues while also helping to rehabilitate dogs so they may be adopted into new fur-ever homes. Big Cypress German Shepherd Rescue serves as a no-kill shelter for at-risk German Shepherd dogs and puppies. In addition, Michelle and her team of volunteers educate the community regarding the importance of spay and neuter, vaccines, nutrition, and the importance of training. This month’s 4Knines spotlight charity, Rusty’s Angels Sanctuary, was recommended by a loyal 4Knines customer. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing a safe and caring environment for senior canines. Through rescue, foster, adoption, education and hospice, volunteers create secure nurturing homes for these worthy seniors to live out their twilight years. The purpose of Rusty’s Angels Sanctuary is to ensure senior canines and dogs with special needs receive the love and respect they deserve until the very end. Most of the sanctuary’s rescues come to them because their owner has passed away or has moved into a nursing home situation. As long as the dog is healthy enough to handle a transition into a new home, the sanctuary does their best to find the perfect forever home. If the dog is not healthy enough, they live out whatever time they have left at the sanctuary. Rusty was Emilee Spear’s first rescue. She adopted him at the age of “ancient,” when he was pulled from the euthanasia list at the local county pound. He was skin and bones, deaf, going blind, had a mouth full of rotten teeth, and was lost and scared. She fostered him for a while before adopting him because she knew no one else would. Rusty taught Emilee that animals don’t deserve to die alone after loving us for all their lives. Rusty is the reason Rusty’s Angels Sanctuary exists. Emilee and her team are dedicated to giving senior dogs the ending they have earned. “I remember what an amazing ‘mess’ Rusty was, and how much he loved me because I saved him when no one else would,” Emilee explains. “And I promised him that I would continue to help those just like him live out their twilight years knowing that same feeling.” The sanctuary also features a farm and a resale boutique. The Farm of Hope was started when two domesticated ducks were dumped in a neighborhood park. The sanctuary rescued the ducks and named them Ross and Rachel. Four ducks, 15 chickens, four goats, two burros and a horse now call the farm home. Rusty’s Resale Boutique helps to raise money for the sanctuary. All revenue from the boutique will go right back into the care of their senior dogs.
